How to Record the Last 30 Seconds of Gameplay on PC

You do not need to record an entire gaming session just in case something worth keeping happens. If you want to record the last 30 seconds on PC, the feature you are looking for is usually called a replay buffer, instant replay or background recording.

Instead of permanently saving hours of footage, replay software keeps a rolling window of recent gameplay available temporarily. When something happens — a clutch win, ridiculous bug, perfect reaction or unexpected moment — you press a hotkey and the software saves the previous 30 seconds, or whatever duration you configured, as a clip.

How recording the previous 30 seconds actually works

Normal recording and replay capture solve slightly different problems. With continuous recording, you start recording before the action happens and footage continues being written until you stop. A long session can therefore leave you with a large recording that you later need to search through.

A replay buffer is designed for moments you could not predict. While it is running, the software continuously maintains only a limited recent window of encoded footage. As new footage enters the buffer, older footage falls out. Trigger Save Replay and the retained section is written out as a clip.

If your replay duration is 30 seconds, for example, pressing the capture hotkey at 20:15:30 would roughly give you the gameplay leading up to that point rather than requiring you to have pressed Record at 20:15:00.

The easiest ways to save the last 30 seconds on PC

There is no single best option for everyone. Windows includes a convenient capture option, GPU software can provide efficient instant replay on supported hardware, and OBS gives you considerably more control over a replay-buffer setup.

Option 1: Use Windows Xbox Game Bar

For someone who occasionally wants to capture something that just happened in a game, Windows’ built-in gaming capture features are a sensible place to start. Game Bar can capture recent gameplay when background recording is enabled, avoiding the need to manually start a normal recording every time you launch a game.

Open the Windows gaming capture settings and check the options for recording what happened or background capture. The exact labels and available duration settings can vary with your Windows version and configuration, so it is worth checking the current settings on your PC rather than assuming the default is exactly 30 seconds.

Once configured, learn the keyboard shortcut for saving recent gameplay and test it before relying on it. Record a deliberately obvious test moment, trigger the capture, then open the resulting file and confirm that the duration, game audio and picture quality are what you expected.

Who is Game Bar best for?

Game Bar makes the most sense when simplicity matters more than detailed control. If you just want the occasional clip and the built-in capture behaves well with your games, you may not need anything more complicated.

Option 2: Use NVIDIA Instant Replay

PCs with supported NVIDIA hardware can also use NVIDIA’s gameplay capture tools, including an instant-replay function. The basic idea is the same: enable instant replay, choose how much recent gameplay you want retained, and use the relevant shortcut when something happens.

This can be a convenient solution because replay capture is closely integrated with the GPU ecosystem rather than requiring you to build an OBS scene purely for clipping. As with any capture method, check the current NVIDIA software settings for replay length, video quality, audio and save location, because software interfaces and options can change over time.

If you already have compatible NVIDIA hardware and only need straightforward gameplay replays, try the built-in option before adding more software to your workflow.

Option 3: Record the last 30 seconds with OBS Replay Buffer

OBS is especially useful when you want control over what is being captured. Its Replay Buffer lets you keep recent encoded footage available and save it on demand instead of making one enormous recording.

The precise OBS interface can change between versions, but the workflow is straightforward: configure your recording output, enable Replay Buffer, choose the replay duration, assign a Save Replay hotkey and start the buffer before playing.

How to set up a 30-second OBS Replay Buffer

  1. Set up your capture scene. Add the game, display or other sources you actually want in the saved clip, along with the appropriate audio sources.
  2. Open OBS settings. Review your output and recording configuration so the resulting clips use the quality and format you want.
  3. Enable Replay Buffer. Find the Replay Buffer option in the relevant output settings and switch it on.
  4. Set the replay duration. Configure the maximum replay time to 30 seconds if you specifically want approximately the previous half-minute. You can choose a longer duration if your clips regularly need more context.
  5. Assign a Save Replay hotkey. Open the Hotkeys settings and bind Save Replay to a key or key combination you can reach while gaming without interfering with game controls.
  6. Start Replay Buffer. The buffer needs to be running before the moment occurs. Starting OBS alone does not necessarily mean your replay buffer is active.
  7. Test it. Play for more than 30 seconds, create an obvious test event, press your Save Replay hotkey and inspect the resulting file.

That last test is important. Finding out after your best moment of the night that the wrong audio source was selected is much more frustrating than spending a minute checking the setup beforehand.

Why use OBS instead of normal recording?

Suppose you play for four hours but only produce five moments worth keeping. A continuous recording gives you a four-hour file to store and navigate. A replay-buffer workflow can instead leave you with five relatively short clips, assuming you remember to save each moment.

Continuous recording still has an important advantage: it preserves everything. If you are recording a walkthrough, long-form video, tournament session or anything where you may need footage you did not think to clip at the time, recording the full session can be the safer approach.

How long should your replay buffer be?

Thirty seconds is a useful starting point, but it is not automatically the right duration for every game. Think about how far back the interesting part of a typical clip actually begins.

  • 15–30 seconds: good for quick reactions, kills, funny mistakes and isolated moments.
  • 30–60 seconds: gives you more setup and context without making every saved clip unnecessarily long.
  • Several minutes: more appropriate when a highlight develops slowly or you need the build-up to make the moment understandable.

A slightly longer buffer can be useful because you can trim unwanted footage later. The trade-off is that longer and higher-quality buffers require more resources, and every saved replay produces more footage to manage.

Does instant replay constantly fill your drive?

This is one of the main reasons to distinguish replay buffering from ordinary continuous recording. A replay system is intended to maintain a limited rolling window rather than permanently accumulating an entire session as one recording.

That does not mean replay capture uses no resources. The computer still has to capture and encode recent footage, and the buffer itself requires resources while active. When you actually save a replay, that clip also consumes storage like any other video file.

The exact resource usage depends on factors such as resolution, frame rate, encoder, bitrate or quality settings, replay duration and the software you use. Rather than chasing a universal number, test your chosen configuration while playing a demanding game and watch for unwanted performance impact.

Quality settings still matter for a 30-second clip

Short clips can still look poor if the capture settings are unsuitable. Fast-moving gameplay is particularly good at exposing compression artefacts, so make sure your recording resolution, frame rate and quality settings are appropriate for the content you want to publish.

Higher settings are not automatically better. They can increase encoding load and file size without producing a meaningful benefit for your eventual destination. A clip intended for a small vertical social post may have different practical requirements from footage you plan to edit into a high-quality YouTube video.

Choose a replay hotkey you will actually remember

The best replay configuration is useless if you cannot trigger it quickly. Choose a hotkey that is easy to reach but unlikely to conflict with a game, push-to-talk key, streaming shortcut or other application.

Then build the habit of pressing it immediately after something worth keeping happens. Remember that a rolling buffer keeps moving. If your buffer is 30 seconds long and you wait too long before saving the replay, the beginning of the moment may already have dropped out.

When replay capture becomes part of a creator workflow

Saving the previous 30 seconds solves the first problem: capturing an unexpected moment. Creators often have a second problem immediately afterwards — finding the clip, making quick edits and turning it into something they can publish.
